Michael Jackson

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Michael Jackson, as they come to terms with his untimely passing. From his beginnings in Gary, Indiana, through his amazing youth and superstar years in the '80's and '90's, the world had many different images of Michael. He was a musical genius who's only contemporaries were Elton John, Lionel Ritchie and ABBA and McCartney, a dancer in the leagues of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Gregory Hines, Sammy Davis Jr., Travolta and Baryshnikov.

Who can forget "Motown's 25th" where he moonwalked us into a cheering frenzy or the anticipation of waiting for his "Thriller" video to debut?

Most importantly, however, was his humanity. His caring and contributions to those less fortunate is legendary, from his and Ritchie's joint efforts in putting together "We are the World's" music for the "USA for Africa" efforts, his visit to New York after 9/11, to the quieter support of Ryan White and his generous visit to Stockton, CA after the first mass school shooting in the nation (1989's Cleveland School shooting) where children had been killed, injured or traumatized. Michael came, cheered and encouraged, wiping away trauma and horror and leaving joy in his wake.

Michael "showed up", no matter what the issue and his contributions to society with his music - "Black or White", "We Are the World", "Gone too Soon" and "With a Child's Heart" are among the many socially conscious efforts we remember as we pay tribute to him.

Yes, the world media and tabloids will mull over the reasons for his death, his drastic appearance changes and tortured soul ad nauseum, til every rock is overturned and his life is even more exposed than before. But we want to remember the best of Mr. Michael Joseph Jackson. He mattered to so many, he made a difference and there are few and far between who can match his generosity of time, talent and spirit among his peers who remain, despite the sadness and loneliness that seemed to follow him. He will be missed. We hope you enjoy our selections to showcase what we feel is the best of Michael Jackson's art.
